Corelex Shin-Ei Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "Japan Tetra Pak") and others at the conference venue and related facilities used for the G7 Hiroshima Summit held from May 19 to May 21, 2023. Mineral water was provided in aluminum foil-lined paper containers at the hotels and at the International Media Center used for the event, and during the Partners’ Program. Corelex Shin-Ei set up special collection boxes for these mineral water containers in the International Media Center, collected the used paper containers generated at the facility, and then recycled them as raw materials used for toilet paper and tissue paper production.
The mineral water provided to the G7 Summit was served in Tetra Prisma® Aseptic 330ml Square Dream Cap™ 26 paper containers manufactured by Japan Tetra Pak. These containers are FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, with some having caps made of plant-derived (sugarcane) polyethylene. The use of plant-derived materials has resulted in a 63% use of renewable resources and a 7% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Paper containers used for mineral water are coated with aluminum to prevent deterioration due to leakage and light penetration, and because it is difficult to separate the aluminum from the paper fibers, they are generally incinerated instead of recycled. However, with its proprietary technology, Corelex Shin-Ei is able to separate the materials and extract only the paper fibers during the manufacturing process, even when the aluminum is adhered to the paper, and the cap is attached. Furthermore, the company has also established a recycling process for the separated foreign matter, and are achieving zero emissions.

By collecting and recycling difficult-to-recycle recovered paper, Corelex Shin-Ei will continue to reduce the amount of waste generated, secure recovered paper raw materials, protect and conserve forest resources, and contribute to building a sustainable, circular economy.
