Japan Pulp & Paper Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Tokyo, Japan; President: Akihiko Watanabe) has developed paper cups that utilize BioPBS™, a plant-based, biodegradable plastic resin.
BioPBS™ resin is manufactured and sold by PTT MCC Biochem Company Limited, a joint-venture subsidiary equally owned by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Head Office: Tokyo, Japan; President & CEO: Masayuki Waga) and PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (Head Office: Bangkok, Thailand). When buried, microorganisms in the soil will cause BioPBS™ to naturally biodegrade into water and carbon dioxide. BioPBS™ has a high heat resistance amongst general-purpose biodegradable resins, and its ability to naturally biodegrade together with paper make it an ideal product for applications including lamination on the internal and external surfaces of paper cups.
Given the environmentally friendly characteristics of BioPBS™ and its superior resistance to both water and heat, Japan Pulp & Paper has focused on the product’s suitability for use as a laminating material on paper cups. The Company has been working with various converters in Japan and has completed the necessary arrangements for the production of its BioPBS™ paper cups in large quantities. Japan Pulp & Paper is now looking to develop new lamination applications for BioPBS™ other than paper cups, and is also proceeding to develop new business for BioPBS™ outside of Japan.
The Japan Pulp & Paper Group acknowledges the preservation of the global environment as one of the fundamental principles guiding the management of its business, with the entire Group proactively working to further develop its environmental business activities. With the environmental pollution being caused by waste plastics now becoming a global issue, by developing products that will contribute to a sustainable circular economy, the Japan Pulp & Paper Group is working to reduce the burden on the environment through its business activities.
